Artist Statement / Biography

Sarah Domitille Jehle (b.1998) is a visual artist, dancer, social worker and DJ of German-Burundian heritage, based in Berlin, Germany. Through charcoal drawing, acrylic painting and performance art, her practice investigates the body as a medium where experiences and emotions become immediately perceptible ,her practice investigates the body as a medium where experiences and emotions become immediately perceptible. Her work explores the coexistence of past and present as expressed through bodily presence.

Working autobiographically, she reads her diary as a research tool—drawing thematic material for new works while documenting Afrogerman experience. Against historical and contemporary patterns of objectification, stereotyping, and exoticization, Jehle reclaims the body as a site of subjectivity and complexity. Formally, this emerges in minimalist pictorial spaces and softened contours, where figures hover between visibility and dissolution. Her practice navigates vulnerability, the desire for safety, and the unsaid within a tension between intimacy and distance.

After preliminary studies at Jugendkunstschule Meersburg (2018–2019) and completing her Bachelor’s degree in Movement Pedagogy and Dance in Social Work (Fachhochschule Clara Hoffbauer, 2019–2022), she developed an autonomous artistic practice focused on charcoal drawing and acrylic painting.

From September 2025 to March 2026, she participated in an intensive six-month mentorship with Thelonious Stokes in Florence, Italy — classically trained oil painter, performance artist, and the first African American graduate of the Florence Academy of Art. This training deepened her technical command of figurative drawing and reinforced her investigation of the body as witness and archive. During this period, she began integrating performance art into her practice.

Since 2026, she works as a social worker and visual artist in Berlin. She is represented by ARTCLUB and recently presented her work in the group exhibition “Hypogeum” (for PLATTE during Berlin Art Week).
